When a Permian Basin operator needed to move wet sour gas from a well pad to a takeaway pipeline, its engineers specified LPS’ CCB® Sleeves to protect the weld zone of the internally coated steel pipe.

Wet sour gas is one of the harshest services in the oilfield. As the gas cools, water condenses and hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide dissolve into it, forming acids that attack carbon steel. Lines in this service can corrode and fail well short of their design life.

The operator chose carbon steel pipe internally coated with a novolac fusion-bonded epoxy, or FBE, proven in sour service. The CCB® Sleeves were coated with the same novolac FBE and sealed at the edges with a novolac sealant, protecting the joint with the same coating chemistry as the rest of the pipe.

The schedule was urgent. LPS hand-delivered the materials to the site within five weeks and provided technicians to support the contractor through installation.

The pipeline is now in operation, and the well pad is producing again.
